Han Chiang College Golden Achievement Awards 2013
Speech by Dato’ Dr Cheah See Kian
Honorary Principal/Executive Director
29-09-2013

We started organising the Golden Achievement Awards annually in 2000, but the event only caught the attention of the public in 2011 when the Board of Directors decided to invite the media practitioners and broadcast journalists to participate in the open category awards. The awards were given in recognition of the media practitioners’ contributions to the society and the country. The winners were awarded with cash prizes ranging from RM5000 to RM10000, certificates and trophies.

Since then, the Golden Achievement Awards has gradually garnered the attention of the public.

In 2012, we added “red carpet star walk”, the best dressed and photography contests to make the event more like Taiwan’s “Golden Horse Awards”.  “The red carpet star walk” has become the talk of the town among the students.

We also added the most outstanding alumni awards to commend our alumni who have achieved considerable success in the media or other fields.

The reason why Han Chiang is the most well-known institution in the media industry is because it had successfully produced four chief editors in four major Chinese press in the 70s.  In 1978, Han Chiang High School offered a journalism programme and it was the first journalism programme in Malaysia.  In a span of 10 years (1978-1988), the School produced more than 300 graduates of whom more than 100 graduates joined the media industry.  As of to date, 6 of them are holding key positions in the Chinese press and has thus portrayed a glorious chapter in the history of Han Chiang.

To commend our fellow alumni who have obtained remarkable achievements, this year, our judges selected two outstanding alumni – an alumnus from Han Chiang High School Journalism programme and the other from Han Chiang College.  They are: Mr Kuik Cheng Kang, Chief Editor of Sin Chew Daily and Mr Tan Sin Chow, Senior Reporter of The Star.  They will receive RM2000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate to commend them for winning glory for Han Chiang.

Kuik is from Muar, Johor.  He joined the Han Chiang Journalism programme in 1983 and after he graduated in 1985, he joined Sin Ming Jit Poh as a reporter before joining Sin Chew Daily in 1990.  Due to his outstanding work performance, he was promoted from Assistant Head of Journalism to Chief Editor in 2008.

He has covered various international events, including covering news on world economics forum and Wang Gu dialogue and accompanying the former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on official visits, etc.

Mr Kuik has proven himself to be one of the talented alumni who works hard towards achieving greater heights in the media industry.

Mr Tan Sin Chow graduated in 2004 from Han Chiang College.  After graduation, he joined The Star as a reporter.  Apart from his passion for journalism work, he has a thirst for knowledge.  He juggled his time between work and study and finally obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern Queensland and Universiti Sains Malaysia respectively.  His determination and willingness to learn can be a role model for others. He never fails to study when he is working and never stops to upgrade himself while he is studying.  Obviously, his self-assurance has been recognised by his superiors and the society.  He has also won several awards. He is one of the media practitioners produced by Han Chiang.

We will continue to commend our outstanding alumni.  We are very proud that Han Chiang has not only produced media practitioners for the Chinese press but also for the English and Malay press. Besides, a large number of them are currently employed by TV stations, large and well-known multi national corporations in various industries.

The competitions among the students for the awards are very stiff this year. Tonight, we will unveil the winners of the awards. Besides, we have added an inter-institution award in the open category.  The awards are open to students from institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.  The purpose of the award is to foster good rapport and encourage academic exchanges among the institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.

Han Chiang College has been holding an important position in the media.  Our experience gained in the past 35 years has moulded Han Chiang College to be the “Cradle of the Media”.  In early 2014, with the significant development in the College, our Prime Minister has agreed to assist us in upgrading Han Chiang College to University College of Communication.

We would like to thank our prime minister for his recommendation and support.  We have made a presentation on the progress of Han Chiang College in the past 13 years in our application to be upgraded to a university college in June 2013 and expect to receive some good news from the Ministry of Education soon.

Since its establishment, we have managed the College based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Education.  Besides, we also continue to upgrade the facilities and increase the number of academic staff with doctorates to meet the requirements of the Ministry.

Apart from GAA, the College also organised another grand event annually – Anchor Idol Newscaster Quest.  These two events have become the brand names of Han Chiang College.  They are vital in our application to be upgraded to University College of Communication.

We wish Han Chiang College will be upgraded to a university college soon.  I believe if we work hard, we will fulfil our dream in the near future.

Last but not least, let us follow this year’s theme to look back on the eastern and western societies in the 20s to 30s and let us watch and enjoy the performance of the 929 Golden Achievement Awards.

Thank you for your presence and I wish you good health and happiness.
