虽然我们无法打造一个天堂，但我们可以打造一座世外桃源
—谢诗坚的客家梦
今天是一个平凡的日子，但对浮罗山背来说是一个不平凡的日子，我们苦心构想和梦寐以求的理想终于要化成现实了。我谨此在这里宣布，一个新的旅游景点，一个命名为“浮罗山背客家村”的宏伟计划将在浮罗山背离开双溪槟榔不远的大路旁的一块20依格的土地上建立起来。
感谢热心客家文化的企业家，在知悉我们有一个客家梦后，便在年初与我们接头，希望我们能一起合作，把浮罗山背打造出第一个马来西亚客家村，也是世界上第一个海外客家村，以共同推动旅游业。
经过多次讨论后，我们认为客家本身具有普世性，是属于人类共有的文化遗产，人人都可以发扬和推广。因此我们决定以“客家村”作为主题公园，以在这片土地上建立起符合浮罗山背民情及多元社会需求的集自然生态与文创于一炉的新旅游景点。
再次感谢投资者的“慧眼识客家”，也具有客家情怀，并成立了浮罗山背客家村有限公司作为一个发展平台，以便顺利地开展工作。
由于整个计划耗资不下千万元，也就需要企业家和财团来推动，当成一项文化投资，而社团组织在这方面也难于承担巨额的开销。虽然是企业投资，我们还是准备全程投入，以打造一个具有生命力，有文化气息，且能成为吸引世界万千游客到来观赏的旅游胜地。
非常感谢槟州政府这半年来顺利的通过和批准我们的申请，我们已经进入了提呈发展建设图测的阶段。虽然这离开我们动工还有一段时日，但是我们可以不负众望地向大家宣布，我们将在浮罗山背设立一个座具有现代化和符合酒店业需求的具有土楼特色的酒店供游客住宿，以享受浮罗山背与众不同的自然美景和清新空气。这座土楼酒店它是圆形的，内部有浮罗山背各民族文物馆，用三语呈现，也有艺术走廊，供画家展销精心杰作。
参考土楼结构只是因为土楼一望即知客家，无需再作解释，并不具其他用心。
其中我们也将与台湾大学的客家学院合作，设立客家文化基地，为学者及学界提供文库资料。同时我们也会设立一间客家餐馆；也会设立槟城美食的小贩中心、土产销售中心、旅游产品及精品店等。更为出色的是，我们保留了榴莲园、也会建立豆蔻、丁香和橡胶品种供参观者了解浮罗的特产。我们要让来自世界各地的人真正享受浮罗山背的自然生态和具有价值的文化生态。
根据我们所知，到目前为止浮罗山背还没有一间具有规模的酒店。此外，我们也将建小别墅出租予家庭或组织单位。当然在这片土地上也将设立脚车走道，并有一个小桥流水的景色。
就我个人而言，这是我有生之年的第三个梦。第一个梦是在千禧年时我决心重建会所，尽管当时筹不够钱，最终我们完成了五层大楼，还我客家人尊严。
第二个梦是在2004年会所开幕后，我通过客联会的集资在公会的三楼内设立马来西亚客家文物馆，更在后来附设槟州首任首席部长丹斯里王保尼乡贤纪念厅（2006年），成为客家人的重要文化遗产。
在这之后，我邀请台湾的客家学者长期在浮罗山背进行田野调查和研究，以鉴定客家人的成份和比数有多深和多高。最后的结论是“浮罗山背无疑是客家人的聚落”，客家话十分通行，甚至早年在浮罗山背的天主教堂是用客家话颂经文的。由于时代的久远和浮罗山背发展十分缓慢，许多青年人已经离开山城到外地谋生和创业，包括客家才俊。
因此我们被献议可以在浮罗山背设立一个客家人的地标，以展示客家人辉煌的过去。于是我有了第三个梦。
在初时，我们只想建一座土楼式的文物馆，但也不易成事。我只能把这个“浮罗梦”放在心中，不时透过媒体释放消息。终于皇天不负有心人，在今天的2013年也成就了“浮罗山背客家村”的大蓝图。
前前后后，这第三个梦从2007年孕育到今天一共6年才让我们美梦成真。由于整个计划工程十分浩大，我们需要用3年至5年的时间来完成大蓝图，请大家耐心等待。我们要做的不只是开辟一个新的旅游胜地，而且是一个自然形成（与英殖民时期赶华人进新村的人为客家村大不相同）的客家村，以槟城的浮罗山背被列为世界客家地图内。一旦完成，它将成为公共的休闲与文创场所，必将是我们客家人的骄傲。

We can’t build a heaven, but we can
build a paradise.
Cheah See Kian’s Hakka Dream
Today being an ordinary day is not at all ordinary for
Balik Pulau. Our meticulously planned
and earnest wish is going to realise soon.
I would like to announce that a new tourist destination named “Balik
Pulau Hakka Village” is breaking ground at a 20-acre land in Balik Pulau nearby
Sungai Pinang.
I would like to thank the entrepreneurs of Hakka
Culture. Upon knowing our Hakka dream,
they contacted us earlier this year for collaboration. They hoped to develop Malaysia’s as well as
world’s first Hakka village to promote tourism industry.
After many discussions, we think that Hakka clan is
rather universal. It is a collective
cultural heritage that most people can develop and promote. That is why we decided on the theme “Hakka
Village” for the new tourist attraction cum ecological spot to match the multifarious
elements and social needs of Balik Pulau.
I would like to thank the investors again for their
investment foresight as well as their sentiments towards Hakka culture. Without whom there will be no Balik Pulau Sdn
Bhd as a platform to develop this project.
The entire development costs more than 10 million
Ringgit and hence it requires the investments from the entrepreneurs and consortiums. Societies and associations are unable to
afford such a costly development.
Despite being an enterprise investment project, we are ready to
participate to create a vital and cultural attraction to draw the tourists from
around the world.
We are very
grateful to Penang government to approve this development project within a
short span of 6 months. We are now in
the process of submitting detailed drawings to the authority. While the construction has not taken place, I
am glad to announce that there will be a modern hotel-standard lodging place
inspired and designed according to the conventional earthen building. The round-shape building will house Balik
Pulau Cultural Museum and art gallery for exhibitions. Exhibitions will be presented in
trilingual.
Earthen building is the obvious feature of Hakka
culture. The design adaptation is
self-explanatory and matches the theme of this development.
We are collaborating with one of the Taiwan
universities’ College of Hakka Studies to establish Hakka cultural base as a
resource centre for the academicians. We
will also open a restaurant to sell Hakka food.
There will also be a hawker centre selling local delicacies and
souvenirs. We have also preserved a durian
farm with nutmeg, clove and rubber plantations for showcasing the natural heritage
of Balik Pulau. We hope the tourists can
enjoy the true value of Balik Pulau’s ecology and culture.
Thus far, there is no sizable hotel in the vicinity of
Balik Pulau. Apart from the hotel,
family or organisation can lease the resort villas for gatherings. As a recreational area, Hakka Village will be
completed with bicycle track and a man-made lake.
To me personally, this is the third dream of my
life. The first was to build a club
house for the Hakka clan. Despite
financial difficulties, we eventually managed to complete a five-storey
building for the benefit and dignity of Hakka people.
My second dream was to establish Hakka Cultural
Museum. After the opening of Hakka
Clubhouse in 2004, we set up the museum in the third floor of the clubhouse
through fund raising programme by Hakka Association. And later we established another similar setting
in Penang’s first Chief Minister Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee Monument Hall
(2006). These have become an important
cultural heritage of Hakka people.
After this, I invited Taiwanese Hakka scholars to
conduct fieldwork and research at Balik Pulau to identify the composition and
ratio of Hakka population. In the end we
concluded that Balik Pulau is indeed a settlement place of the early Hakka
clan. Hakka dialect is widely used to
such an extent that the Catholic Church in Balik Pulau used Hakka dialect to
recite Bible verses in their early days.
As the development in Balik Pulau is lagging behind, many youngsters and
young talents have left and sought better advancement in the urban city.
That was the reason why we proposed to build a Hakka
landmark to commemorate the glorious history of Hakka people. And that is where my third dream was
derived.
My initial plan was to build an earthen building as a
cultural museum. This is not easy. I could but only kept this Balik Pulau
“dream” aside. Through much publicity in
the media, our effort has finally paid off in 2013 when the Hakka Village
blueprint was realized.
It took a total of six years to materialize this
dream. Given the project size, it will
take another three to five years to complete the plan. We seek your patience. Not only are we developing a tourist
attraction, but also a holistic ecological Hakka Village (this village is
different from the village in the time of British colonization when Chinese
were forced to reside). This will be a
significant landmark for Hakka in the world map. Hakka Village will be an ideal leisure and
cultural spot and is truly a pride of Hakka people.
